According to legend, when Vietnam was just founded, invaders came to attack. God sent a family of dragon descending to the land to help the country. When the boats of invaders came, dragon family puffed various pearls and treasures and they created hundreds of islands and islets, forming the solid walls to protect the country and against the ahead steps of invaders. The boats which were fast in running to the mainland was blocked suddenly then being punctured into rocks and with each other. They were blocked out. Finishing the battle, Mother dragon and Children Dragon didn’t want to come back to the sky, still staying here. The place where Mother Dragon descended was Halong Bay and the site for Children Dragon to descend was Bai Tu Long Bay. The tail of the dragon extended far to the sea, forming Bạch Long Vĩ island (meaning "The Tail of the White Dragon").
